All About Cane Corso Poodle Mix And What Makes It Special

You’ve heard of Poodles. You’ve heard of Cane Corsos. Have you heard of Canoodles, Cane Corso Poodle mixes that have captured the hearts of thousands?

Poodles are one of the most popular dog breeds in the world. They are friendly, hypoallergenic, and make amazing family pets.

Cane Corsos are one of the largest worker dogs out there. Stories about their temperament preceded them, and many people consider them to be quite scary.

So, what happens when you mix these two seemingly unmixable breeds?

Let’s find out!

Appearance

This is why most of you are here: to find out the physical characteristics of a Cane Corso Poodle mix, also known as the Canedoodle or the Canoodle.

It can be challenging to correctly predict what a hybrid dog will look like. This will entirely depend on the genetics passed on from the parent breeds.

However, some assumptions can be made, as there are many other Poodle and Cane Corso mixes we can take as an example.

These mixed puppies are likely to look like Cane Corsos but with Poodle’s thick, curly coat. This coat can vary from dense curls to loose waves, but it’s likely to be medium to long in length. Some might even have straight, fuzzy coats, but this is quite rare.

Most will have large, square heads of Cane Corsos but with less loose skin.

Also, their tails will be left long, and their ears will be naturally floppy, as both Cane Corsos and Poodles are born with floppy ears. The difference is that most breeders crop Cane Corsos’ ears, contributing to their frightening stature.

Their eyes will be round and brown, and their coat color is likely to be black. However, as Poodles are one of the most colorful dog breeds, and there are also several Cane Corso colors available, Canoodles can come in different hues.

Cane Corso Poodle Mix Size

Again, just like any other trait, Canoodle’s size cannot be precisely predicted. Still, a few things are certain.

A Poodle Cane Corso mix will be a large-size dog

Cane Corso is one of the biggest dog breeds out there, with a height that can reach 28 inches.

Due to their height, they are always bred with a standard Poodle, as smaller types of Poodle could not give birth to the Cane Corso Poodle mix puppies. Standard Poodles typically have a height of 18 – 24 inches.

This means that their crossbreed will typically stand anywhere between 18 and 28 inches in height. Most of the time, puppies will be taller than a Poodle but smaller than a Cane Corso, although this isn’t something set in stone.

When it comes to weight, Cane Corsos typically weigh between 90 and 110 lbs, while Poodles weigh between 45 and 75 lbs. A Canoodle will usually weigh between 60 and 100 lbs, but this can vary a bit.

It’s important to note that, due to differences in size, a Cane Corso parent will always be female. A female Poodle, no matter how tall, couldn’t naturally carry and give birth to such large puppies.

Of course, some unethical breeders might switch this around, but this will endanger both the mother and the offspring.

    Temperament

    canoodle mixed breed

Another thing that probably worries most aspiring dog owners is the temperament of the Cane Corso Poodle mix puppies.

Cane Corsos are territorial and dominant dogs that are known for their aggressive tendencies. They aren’t good with other dogs, and due to their high prey drive, they are not suitable for households with small animals and children.

This doesn’t mean they aren’t affectionate; they can just be challenging to control – especially if you’re an inexperienced owner.

Luckily, Poodle’s friendly and goofy temperament will mellow this down quite a lot. Poodles are some of the most social dog breeds out there, and they’ll pass this on to their offspring.

Because of this, Canoodle is a great guard dog, but it isn’t as temperamental and aggressive as a purebred Cane Corso

He can be quite playful and loving, while also keeping your house safe from any intruders.

Still, some dogs might pick up more Cane Corso genetics, making them a bit trickier and more challenging.

Also, you can never be entirely certain that a Canoodle will always be of best behavior. Because of this, it’s important to stick to proper training and socialization.

    Trainability

As training is so important to Canoodles, it’s a good thing that these are some of the most trainable dogs out there.

The intelligence of the Cane Corso Poodle mix cannot be disputed. These are some of the smartest dogs out there. Both Poodles and Cane Corsos are extremely intelligent. In fact, many experts consider Poodles to be the most intelligent dog breed out there!

Learning tips and tricks, as well as good behavior, will be almost effortless. Canoodles will love to please their owners, and they’ll do all they can to keep them happy.

    Socialization

Even though most Canoodles will be very friendly dogs, they will still greatly benefit from early socialization.

Due to Cane Corsos’ unfriendliness combined with great strength and size, a Canoodle that isn’t socialized can be a threat.

These dogs can have a high prey drive, making them unsuitable for smaller dogs and pets such as parrots, hamsters, or cats.

A friendlier Canoodle will be an affectionate dog that will likely try to get close to any family member. However, they will usually be shy around other dogs, and sometimes they can be quite territorial.

Because of this, it’s essential to expose them to different activities, situations, people, and animals from an early age.

Canoodles’ mixed heritage makes them unpredictable. While they might seem like sociable dogs, you still want to make sure you’ve done all you can to prevent any possible accidents.

    Exercise Needs

cane corso and poodle dog breeds

Canoodles are likely to be energetic dogs that will need lots of activities to keep their energy levels at bay.

They will likely be calmer than Cane Corsos, but they’ll still need more extensive play sessions than Poodles.

As both parents are large breeds, their size, combined with exercise needs, makes them unsuitable for apartments, especially smaller ones.

Keep in mind that just because you’ve taken your Canoodle on an hour-long walk doesn’t mean he’s had enough exercise. You must include other activities, such as a long game of fetch or a tug-of-war to make sure his energy is depleted.

Just like with any other dog breed, if you allow your pet to have lots of piled up energy, he might become destructive.

    Are Canoodles Good With Kids?

Any dog can be an excellent family pet. It all comes down to his unique temperament and proper training.

With that being said, Canoodles can be great with kids. They are protective and loyal, and most will be very friendly.

However, I wouldn’t leave them with small children without supervision. No, their potential aggression is not the main issue here.

As Canoodles are enormous and energetic dogs, they are likely to run around during playtime. Accidents can always happen, and they can run into a child or push them over. This can lead to injuries.

Not just that, male Canoodles might be a bit dominant, and they might not like it if a child tries to play rough.

Make sure you are always in the room with a Canoodle and your toddler, or wait until your kids are a bit older before you get this mixed-breed puppy.

    Grooming Requirements

Poodle Cane Corso mix is a dog that requires more grooming than its purebred Cane Corso parent.

His coat will be thick and curly, and regular brushing is essential to keep his skin and coat healthy. Also, this is important to prevent mats.

Don’t forget to trim your dog’s nails, brush his teeth, and clean his ears. Grooming is more than just brushing.

Fortunately, even with all these tasks, taking care of a Cane Corso Poodle mix isn’t such a challenging task.

    Are Canoodles Hypoallergenic?

Most Poodle mixes are known for their hypoallergenic coats that don’t shed that much. Is this the case with a Canoodle?

Let me drop one truth right here: No dog is truly hypoallergenic. Allergens are not found just in the dog’s hair, but also in dandruff, drool, and saliva.

And even if the only thing causing you to sneeze was hair, even then, these pups couldn’t really be considered hypoallergenic. They will still experience some shedding, although the certain amount will vary.

In general, the straighter the coat, the more the shedding. When a dog’s coat is curly, loose hairs will tangle on each other instead of flying everywhere. The more your Canoodle looks like a Poodle, the less he will shed.

Either way, a Canoodle will shed less than a Cane Corso. Still, as his hair can be quite long, you’ll end up with the same amount of hair.

Not just that, but Cane Corsos are dogs that tend to drool. While a Canoodle might not drool just as much, there is always a chance things will be kinda wetter around them.

    Food And Diet Requirements

Large dog breeds, such as Canoodles, have unique dietary needs due to their size, growth rate, and potential health concerns.

First and most important, they require a balanced diet with high-quality protein sources. Look for dog foods specifically formulated for large breeds, as they should contain all the essential nutrients your pooch might require.

Make sure to pick the appropriate food for your dog’s age. A puppy won’t have the same diet requirements as an adult dog.

Finally, while these pups need lots of calories to function properly, you shouldn’t overfeed them. If they become overweight, they will be at a higher risk of certain health conditions that large dogs tend to have a problem with.

    Health

In general, mutts have much better health than purebred dogs. While they can get any health issue their purebred parent might get, the chances of this happening are much lower.

This is due to a wider gene pool. To put it simply, if there are plenty of variable genes to choose from, a puppy is more likely to inherit good ones.

Still, there is always a chance of your Canoodle developing some of these conditions:

    • Hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia, joint disorders that are especially common in large dogs.
    • Hypothyroidism, a condition in which a dog’s thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormones.
    • Ear infections, something both Cane Corsos and Poodles are prone to.
    • Eye disorders, such as entropion, cataracts, and progressive retinal atrophy (PRA).
    • Skin issues, for example allergies, demodectic mange, and hot spots.
    • Obesity.
    • Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus, also known as bloat, occurs when the stomach gets filled with fluids, food, or gas, which can lead to a shock.
    • Gastric Torsion, similar to bloat, this condition occurs when the stomach twists on itself, cutting off blood flow
    • Heart conditions, such as dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM).

If you notice your Canoodle is behaving lethargic, refuses to eat food, limps, suddenly smells bad, or any other weird behavior, it’s essential to take your pooch to the vet.

    Lifespan

We all would love our pets to live forever. Sadly, this isn’t the case, and it’s important to understand how long is your pet likely to live – especially if you are just thinking about buying this dog breed.

As Canoodles are fairly healthy dogs, they tend to have a pretty long lifespan. This probably came as a relief to most of you reading this right now.

On average, a Canoodle will live between 10 and 13 years.

Of course, this is just an estimation. No one can predict precisely just how long your doggie will live, not even your vet.

However, you can expect your Cane Corso Poodle mix to stay with you for quite a few years.

Finally, with a proper diet and just the right amount of exercise, you can help your dog live a long and healthy life.

Why Are Poodles Used For Crossbreeding?

By now, you have probably noticed just how many Poodle mixes are out there. Labradoodles, Goldendoodles, Bernedoodles… Sometimes it seems like there are more Doodles than purebred dogs!

But did you know that there is a practical reason why breeders are combining Poodles with many other dog breeds?

Poodles are some of the friendliest and most loyal dogs out there. Their adorable personality can mellow down any dog’s temperament. Even a mix with Cane Corso can be considered a cute and friendly dog!

Not just that, but Poodles are one of the dog breeds most suitable for allergy sufferers. Their coats don’t shed, they don’t drool, and they don’t require that much grooming.

Any dog bred with a Poodle is likely to inherit these good features, making him a more desirable dog.

    Conclusion

Cane Corso Poodle mix is not a dog for everyone.

These dogs have high energy levels, so if you’re someone who prefers to spend the greatest part of the day lying in bed or sitting at home, maybe you should check out some other crossbreed.

Also, they require professional training, so they are not the best for inexperienced owners who don’t know how to keep their strong nature controlled.

However, if you’re looking for a guard dog that doesn’t have as cold a personality as a Cane Corso, or just want to enjoy having one of the largest crossbreeds in the world, but don’t feel like dealing with a purebred Cane Corso is your cup of tea, a Canoodle is a breeze of fresh air.

Just make sure to buy your Cane Corso Poodle mix from a reputable breeder. This will ensure your pooch is healthy and free from most behavioral defects.

Hopefully, our guide has helped you learn something new and gave you a better understanding of these glorious animals.
