Abandoned dogs go through so many hardships; it’s hard to imagine them all. However, despite all the horror they’ve been through, their ability to show us their gratitude and love keeps surprising us.

Such is the tale of Eskimo Joe, a beautiful Pitbull with a sad story that did have a happy ending.

Left Next To A Doghouse Full Of Frozen Water

It was the winter of  2024 when the temperature was in the single digits. The rescuers of the Stray Rescue of St. Louis (SRSL) have searched the streets of the city, hoping to save abandoned poor souls from the freezing weather.

It wasn’t long before they’d found what they feared would happen – an abandoned house and, next to it, a curled animal desperately trying to keep itself warm.

The poor Pitbull lifted his head for a moment, and it was clear he was neglected. No one was looking after this poor, abandoned pup.

As rescuers came close to him, the doggie happily wagged his tail in disbelief. Who knows for how long he was abandoned, yet he still found it in himself to greet his rescuers.

It quickly became clear that the pup was chained next to a dog house filled with frozen water, making it entirely useless. The poor little pooch was left alone, without an adequate shelter, at the mercy of the cold winter weather.

We walked up to him and he greeted us with tail wags and pressed his body against us as we used bolt cutters to free him,” the rescue wrote on a Facebook post.

The rescue team was led by Donna Lochmann, who was heartbroken looking at the poor dog’s condition.

He was skinny, clearly hungry, and shivering from the cold. Still, this didn’t keep him from cheering when the rescue team finally came.

Once he was freed from the chain, the team took him into the car. This wasn’t a problem for Eskimo Joe, how they’ve named the pup. It seemed as if he was entirely used to being inside the car.

Sadly, this only made it clearer that he used to have a loving home before he was cruelly abandoned.

Looking For A New Home

The team took Eskimo Joe to the vet for the assessment. Other than him being too skinny and heartworm-positive, he seemed to be in great health, which was a luck in misfortune.

The vet gave him a proper treatment plan, which included not only proper medication but lots of love, as well.

Also, it was clear Eskimo Joe was not fit for a life in the kennel. He needed a foster home —  and luckily, he didn’t struggle with finding one.

His new foster mom has said: “He is the most gentle soul I have ever met. He seems to want a canine friend to play with and run around the yard.

He also got along well with the two small dogs in the household, something quite unexpected for a Pitbull. This new friendship helps keep him occupied while waiting for a new home.

He is genuinely curious of the world around him and will need walks/time outside to quietly observe now that he’s free from his chain. This guy is as sweet as can be and deserves nothing but the best,” his foster mom wrote on Facebook.

As of July 2024, it is unknown whether Eskimo Joe has found his forever home or not. One thing is for certain: He’ll never again have to sleep inside a freezing doghouse and shiver while chained to the fence. Instead, his life will be full of cuddles and warm couches, something all good boys like him deserve.
