Paul Odenkirchen and his wife Minnie founded the kennel in 1957. That means they have over 60 years of experience in breeding Chow Chows.
This kennel still has over twenty dogs and is the oldest, still active, Chow Chow kennel in Canada.
The name of the kennel comes from a combination of the names of Minnie and her husband. Funnily enough, in Chinese Mi means beautiful while Pao translates to value, and those are some of the values this breeder stands behind.
Since 1979 Paul has been a member of the Canadian Dog Judges Association (CDJA).
He is licensed as an All-Breed judge, and thanks to that he visited many dog shows all over the world. His expertise was needed in the UK, Germany, Denmark, Finland, Serbia, Croatia, Italy, France, and many many more countries.
After an extremely prestigious career in judging, he is now a judge emeritus.
As Minnie and Paul say, they lost the exact count of the number of championships they went to (over 100). They also don’t keep track of their Best Puppy in Show wins. He handled 12 of the dogs from the MiPao Kennels to one or more Best in Show wins.

Dragonslayer
This small hobby kennel is located in Haley Station. Their first Chow Chow came from White Lake. A gorgeous girl named Pandy. She was the one who ignited their love for the breed.
She had the best temperament one could hope for from a dog in this breed. Soon another member joined the pack. They imported a quality black male who was the pick of the litter in Europe.
The first litter this kennel produced was on January 29th, 1982. With Pandy being the Chow Chow mother and Bear the father. They easily found new homes with loving families for the pups.
After joining the Chow Chow Club Canada (CCCC) (any responsible breeder is a part of breed clubs) they took Bear to a dog show and soon after fell head over heels with showing.
After finding out the red Chow Chows show better than the black Chow Chows in the show ring, they acquired a red female from excellent show lines. As bad luck would have it, the female hated dog shows and showing.
They got a male, hoping for a better placement in the ring because of the bigger heads and more fur in the coat. The male did spectacularly and they decided to start a breeding program.
The rule they followed was that the breeding had to improve on the quality of the dogs they already had or it shouldn’t happen at all.
They produce excellent dogs with stable temperaments and wonderful physical characteristics.
Margaret and John, who started the kennel, still show the dogs occasionally. But when we talk about breeding and prepping the dogs for the shows their daughter Cindy runs the show.
A while back, in 1992, Cindy wanted to use her kennel name. That is how the first Tai Kennel litter of chows was produced. Even though most of the dogs are co-owned by the mother and daughter, some of them might carry one or the other kennel name. In some cases, they carry both.
