The Best Doberman Rescues In Atlanta

The Best Doberman Rescues In Atlanta

Is there a better feeling than to save a life? Rescue dogs can provide you with that warm, fulfilling emotion.

I can give you many reasons and personal opinions on why to opt for adoption over buying from a breeder, but let me share a heartbreaking fact.

More than 359,000 pups in the US faced euthanasia in 2023. The average take in statistics, from the shelters, has increased.

Adoption is usually much more cost-effective than buying from the breeder, and the pooches come housebroken and socialized.

Furthermore, you gain the right to brag about saving the life of a puppy boy or a puppy girl!

The impact of Doberman Rescue Atlanta and Georgia Doberman Rescue extends beyond saving individual dogs, contributing to the community’s awareness of responsible pet adoption.

Best Doberman Rescues In Atlanta, Georgia

Dobie is a working dog who can excel at dog sports like IGP, scent work, or dog agility. Furthermore, they can be a wonderful fit for a pet home and people who just like to chill with their dogs in public places.

If you are ready to open your heart and invite a Dobie into your loving family situated in Georgia, this one’s for you!

We compiled the reputable adoption centers where you can start your journey.

By reaching out to these organizations, you can provide a much-needed home for your first Doberman.

1. Doberman Rescue Of Atlanta (DRA)

Made up of numerous people from the Atlanta area, the DRA is a volunteer group run by Jane Fratesi.

They concentrate their best efforts on giving loving homes to adopted dogs. Their dog intake comes from shelters and the owner surrenders as well.

They have a determination to find loving homes for four-legged friends in need.

The Georgia Department of Agriculture licenses this volunteer organization, and it adheres to the Code of Ethics of the Doberman Pinscher Club of America.

The founders were people with years of experience in Dobie rescue.

The executives of DRA used to be part of the Atlanta Doberman Pinscher Rescue (ADPR). ADPR is a committee of the Atlanta Doberman Pinscher Club. At the moment, ADPR is not taking part in adoption.

How To Adopt

The easiest way to go through this application process is to start with an inquiry. After answering some initial questions, you will complete an online application.

The next step is the Doberman Rescue Atlanta checking the references provided and calling the veterinarian you go to. If that goes well, you can meet the Dobie you are interested in.

Assuming both parties involved agree to the adoption, a home visit is set up as the last step.

Some adoption policies are in place and expected to be respected. You can read all 24 of them on their website, but some include:

  • Every potential adopter is to have a fully fenced backyard with padlocked gates.
  • The adopted Doberman must be an indoor pet.
  • They don’t place the Dobies in a forever home with children under 12 years.

Expenses

You can find all the necessary prices on their website, they differ from dog to dog. They can range from 250 to 500 dollars for the pooches currently up for adoption.

2. Georgia Doberman Rescue (GDR)

While not located precisely in Atlanta, but rather in its close area, I have to mention Georgia Doberman Rescue (GDR).

GDR is a nonprofit, volunteer organization with a mission to save abandoned Dobies. New arrivals come from various shelters or are owner surrenders

They have years of experience and closely collaborate with foster homes, diverse volunteers, trainers, and veterinarians to provide loving temporary homes for assessment and potential rehabilitation.

After that, thoroughly vetted new families get their pooch.

If you walk down to GDR headquarters you can educate yourself more about the breed. They offer plenty of information about good nutrition, responsible pet ownership in general, training, and more.

How To Adopt

The adoption process in Georgia Doberman Rescue is split into 4 phases: application, references, home visit, and board review.

The application phase is there so GDR can find the right dog for you. You need to fill out a lengthy questionnaire and include photos of your home. If you rent, a letter from the landlord as well.

The process might be long, but it’s developed to help make the best match for you and your new family dog.

The organization does suitable reference checks with veterinarians and if the need arises personal references as well.

Any furry friends you have at the time have to be up to date on vaccinations, and heartworm preventative. Additionally, you must spay or neuter them.

The home visit is arguably the most important step. During this time the organization gets to know you and your family, gets a look at your lifestyle, and gains an understanding of how their pooches fit in your family.

They do not organize meet and greets before completing the home visit part, out of consideration towards their fosters.

Board members will look over all the information gathered during the application, and have a vote to consent to or refuse the adoption.

Some light paperwork awaits you after the approval of the application, and finalizing the adoption.

Expenses

All canines undergo vaccination, deworming, and spaying or neutering, resulting in adoption fees

The organization prices all pups based on age alone, disregarding the cost to the organization.

  • Pups from 8 weeks to 18 months are priced at $400
  • Pooches from 19 months to 3 years are $350
  • Those from 4 years to 6 years are $300
  • And the seniors, 7+ years, $250

Should You Adopt Or Buy

This is a decision many potential pet parents struggle with. Both have their pros and cons, so let’s get into them!

Adoption

I can tell you from personal experience that filling out that adoption application is such a rewarding feeling. All those unwanted dogs are just waiting for the right home to flourish in.

It’s significantly cheaper to adopt than it is to buy a Dobie, and if there are any health problems you will be aware beforehand. Workers at the adoption centers know the pooches well, so they can perfectly match you with the right Doberman.

You can apply to be a foster family for either of these organizations and check your compatibility with the breed while gaining an additional educational resource.

Adopting from a shelter, however, comes with challenges. Some pups have unfortunately faced harsh or abusive backgrounds, potentially leading to deep emotional trauma.

Patience is your best friend during these times. Pups with trauma may take a longer time to settle into their new homes.

Also, your future bestie can’t come home right away, because the adoption process takes time, but the lasting feeling of satisfaction and pride will remain.

Purchasing From A Breeder

Purchasing from a breeder has advantages, such as getting the wanted breed fast, training a puppy from the start, and getting from a well-socialized and healthy pup.

Reputable breeders can offer you insights into a pup’s personality, health, and pedigree. Some even provide the option to return the pooch if the need arises.

However, it’s very important to be cautious about the negatives, including the risk of irresponsible breeders, higher vet bills for purebreds, elevated purchase costs, and the possibility of unintentionally supporting a puppy mill.

Thorough research is crucial to ensure a positive experience when choosing to buy a pooch from a breeder.

In Conclusion

This breed is a smart, cuddly, and loving companion who deserves another chance.

Having your best friend to accompany you on all adventures is priceless. Amazing as it is, owning a pooch carries a big responsibility and should not be taken lightly.

Take your time with the decision of adding another family member to your pack. If you feel like you don’t have that much time for a working breed, think about an older gentleman or lady who can fit your lifestyle better.
